En 2013, lors d’une balade touristique, nous avons découvert le village de Pieusse, niché dans les vignes produisant la Blanquette de Limoux, à moins d’un quart d’heure de la Cité de Carcassonne, près de l’Abbaye de Saint-Hilaire et de la ville de Limoux.

In 2013, during a tourist trip ,we discoverd the village of Pieusse, nestled in the vines
producing the Blanquette de Limoux , less than a quater of an hour from the city of
Carcassonne , close to the St Hilaire Abbey and the town of Limoux.

In passing in front of the Castle ruins, we fell in love with the majestic dungeon of the middle ages,
which was only waiting for a charming prince to wake it up. A few village elders , sitting on a bench
at the entrance gate were only to eager to tell us the history of this sleeping beauty, almost without
life, but not without a soul.
At the centre of the real Cathare region, far away from the obvious touristic attractions, the
outline of the Pieusse Castle spoke of an ancient history made of peace and promising harvest.
It is even said that the Cathares met there during a determinant council for their heretic church,
and even if the castle only ever belong to their enemies , the Archbishops of Narbonne, well the
story is nice and deserves to be told, as is the one of the treasure well.
Take a gamble on a futur.....
Wanting to give a new horizon to our family life, we decided to buy the Castle in 2014. We wanted to give pride back to this medieval home- particularly to the dungeon- and to transform it in a new space of civic and community life in the heart of the municipality. Straight away , this project was well recieved by the local authority with a desire to liven up the village of Pieusse and to help with its discovery.
Nous avons eu le coup de cœur en passant devant les ruines du château. Son majestueux donjon du Moyen-Âge attendait le prince charmant qui viendrait l’éveiller. Quelques anciens du village, assis sur un banc à l'entrée du portail, ne se sont pas fait prier pour nous conter l’histoire de cette belle endormie, presque sans vie mais pas sans âme. Au cœur du vrai Pays Cathare, loin des flonflons touristiques, la silhouette du château de Pieusse parlait d’une histoire ancienne toute faite de paix et de vendanges prometteuses. On dit même que les cathares s’y réunirent lors d’un concile déterminant pour leur Eglise hérétique. Et même si le château n’appartint jamais qu’à leurs ennemis, les Archevêques de Narbonne, ma foi, l’histoire est belle et mérite d’être contée, comme celle de son puits au trésor.
Pariez sur un avenir…
Désireux de donner une nouvelle direction à nos projets familiaux, nous avons décidé d'acquérir le château en 2014. Nous voulions redonner sa fierté à cette demeure médiévale - particulièrement au donjon - et la transformer en un nouvel espace de vie citoyenne et associative au cœur de la commune. Immédiatement ce projet s'est trouvé en résonance avec la volonté communale d’animer le village de Pieusse et de le faire découvrir.
Notre famille s'est aussitôt entreprise à sauver cet écrin du XIIe siècle contenant l’un des premiers plafonds peints médiévaux de la région afin de le transmettre aux générations futures et, surtout, de lui rendre une destination et un usage dans la société contemporaine. Il était fondamental pour nous que la réhabilitation du donjon et de son plafond soient utiles à la communauté. Il ne s’agissait pas de s’approprier égoïstement le lieu pour n’en faire qu’une résidence privée, sans se préoccuper de savoir s’il serait fréquenté par la population locale, mais bien de redonner vie au lieu et de restituer à la population cet élément de son patrimoine.
Our family instantly started to work on saving this
XIIst century home containing one of the first
medievals painted ceiling of the region, in order to pass
it on to futur generations, but above all, to give it a
destination and a usefulness in today's society.
It was crutial that the renovation of the dungeon and of
its ceiling became useful to the community. It was never
our intention to selfishly make the location a private
residence, our concern was that this place could be
attended by the local population, to really give life back
to this site and to give back to the population this
element of its heritage . While the dungeon has seriously
decline overv the last decades and requires a lot of care
before its interior can be restaured, everything spoke
of the futur.
Malgré que le donjon se soit fortement détérioré depuis des décennies et qu'il demande beaucoup de soins avant que son intérieur ne puisse être restauré, tout y parlait d’avenir.
Live a unique adventure …
We worked hard to revitalise the space and to make it more accessible to the population. We
founded an association with the objectifs to bring to the space a program of cultural and historic
events and of scientific research around the history of the place, while , over time, we were looking
for solutions to the safeguard and the restauration of the monument under the auspices of the
Batiments de France.
Because the heritage is a permanent project, aiming to strenghten the link between individuals, we
wished to transform this place in :
A learning Arena
A meeting Place
A Citizen Space
Vivez une aventure unique …
Nous nous sommes employés à dynamiser l'endroit et à le rendre de
nouveau accessible à la population. Nous avons fondé une association
dans ce sens afin de porter un programme d’animations culturelles et
historiques et de recherches scientifiques sur l'histoire du lieu, tandis
que, dans le même temps, nous cherchions des solutions pour la
sauvegarde et la restauration du monument, sous l’égide des Bâtiments
de France.
Parce que le Patrimoine est un projet permanent visant renforcer les
liens entre les individus, nous souhaitions transformer le lieu en :
Un espace de formation
Un lieu de rencontres
̂Un espace citoyen
un espace de formation technique sur l’art de bâtir au Moyen-Âge :
la restauration du donjon ainsi que celle de son merveilleux plafond
peint étaient l'occasion de développer un chantier-passion, source
d’épanouissement et de satisfaction pour tous les participants .
Une œuvre d’art, une architecture ancienne, afin qu’elles restent
belles et offertes à nous tous, ne doivent leur survie qu’à des actes
forts et généreux, et ceci plus que jamais au XXIe siècle.
A learning Arena on the art of building in the middle ages :
The restauration of the dongeon as well as the marvellous painted ceiling
were the opportuinity to develop a " project-passion" source of
fulffillment and enjoyment for all participants. Work of art , old
architecture , to stay beautiful and available to all, need only generous
and powerful actions, and this more than ever in the 21st Century.
A meeting Place.
un lieu de rencontres :
nous avons réussi, durant un an et pour le plaisir de nombreux habitants de nouveau fiers de « leur » château, à créer des événements marquants autour de l’histoire du Catharisme et de celle du village de Pieusse.
We have acheived during the last year and for the pleasure of many local people again pround of "their Castle" the organisation of significants events around the history of the Catharism and the village of Pieusse
A citizen space
Creating a space for people of different social and cultural origin to meet
Happy and fulfilled to have been able to introduce powerful moments, gathering the
inhabitants of Pieusse around their Castke, we are today in the obligation to sell as we
alone, cannot sustain the full cost of the restoration of the Castle.
We therefore, launch an appeal to a buyer who would approach this historical
heritage with spirit and heart, with the vision of restoring it and leave it accessible
to the public.
This restoration , in the shape of a permanent project, could take place along the
developments of gatherings and manisfestations as the ones already carried out this
year.
This monument listed in 1969, would provide an investor the possibility of saving this work of art( today in danger) within the framwork of the "défiscalisation spécifiques aux Monuments Historiques français" laws: (Tax Deductions)

faisant se côtoyer des personnes d’origines sociales et
culturelles variées :
Heureux et comblés d'avoir pu initier des moments forts
rassemblant les habitants de Pieusse autour de leur château, nous
sommes aujourd’hui dans l’obligation de le vendre, ne pouvant faire
face seuls à la totalité des frais de restauration du château.
Nous lançons donc un appel à un acheteur qui aborderait ce
patrimoine historique avec esprit et cœur, dans l'idée de le
restaurer pour le laisser ouvert à la population. Cette restauration,
sous forme d'un chantier permanent, pourrait se dérouler en
parallèle au développement de rencontres et de manifestations dans
l'esprit de celles déjà réalisées cette année.
Ce monument classé en 1969 permettrait à un investisseur de
sauver ce chef d’œuvre en péril dans le cadre des lois de
défiscalisation spécifiques aux Monuments Historiques français.
Soyez les auteurs des chapitres suivants…
La poursuite de l'écriture de cette histoire pourrait s'envisager en commun, dans l'hypothèse où un éventuel acquéreur passionné d'histoire confierait le suivi du projet et du chantier à son ancien propriétaire. Nous serions alors hébergés dans une partie des dépendances et pourrions ainsi poursuivre le programme de sauvegarde, de protection et d’animation du château. Animateurs-encadrants, nous veillerions à la qualité du chantier tout en animant le lieu afin qu’il reste ouvert au public.
Il reste tant à dire, tant à faire découvrir, tant et tant de moments à partager, tant d’histoires à raconter et tant de notre Histoire à préserver afin de la transmettre au plus grand nombre…

Become the perpetrators of the next Chapters...
The continuation of the writing of this story could be comtemplated as a joint
project: with the senario of a potential buyer, lover of History , who would untrust
the supervision of the project to the former owner
We would then lodge in one of the outbuildings and would be able to carry on the
program of safeguard, conservation and animation of the Castle.
Facilitator, supervisor, we would be able to watch over the quality of the project
while playing a leading role in animating the space to keep it open to the public
There is so much still to say, so much still to discover, so much stories to share and so much more of our History to preserve in order to hand it over to the greatest number possible.....
